If you are still defining “executive presence” by the fit of your suit or the firmness of your handshake, you are bringing a knife to a laser fight. In an era where AI can replicate your technical output and simulate your voice, there is one thing it cannot automate: Presence .
But not the “presence” you think.
In a recent session of the AI Career Success: Influential Visions Podcast, I sat down with Shaina Davis , founder of the Executive Signals Group, to deconstruct why the traditional concept of executive presence is dead—and why External Influence is the new gold standard for leaders navigating the “Great Detachment”.

Shaina argues that presence has been lazily reduced to charisma. In reality, it is cultivated skill designed to win the three wars every modern organization is currently losing:
- The War on Talent: Attracting high-performers who want to follow leaders , not just logos.
- The War on Trust: Closing the gap where consumers no longer trust “corporate branded parrots”.
- The War on Technology: Finding the human “layer of flavor” that AI cannot replicate.
The “Technician Trap” and the Middle-Management Crisis
We are seeing a brutal trend. Middle managers who have spent 20 years perfecting their craft—the “technicians”—are being sidelined because they failed to build a brand outside their office walls.
Your past decisions inherited your current life. To create a life you don’t need a vacation from, you must take control of your narrative before the crisis hits. As The Manning Doctrine states: “Busyness is noise. Outcomes decide”. Waiting to be “magically discovered” is a failing strategy.
The Architecture of External Influence
Building real influence requires a specific sequence. Most people skip to the end, but the foundation is where the authority is built:
- Leadership Identity: What is your unique point of view (POV)? If you can’t explain what you believe about your industry in 30 seconds, you don’t have an identity; you’re just an ambassador for someone else’s dream.
- Leadership Branding: This is the visual and structural “handshake”. Do your images and digital footprint reflect the authority you claim to have?
- Leadership Messaging: Framing complex ideas in clear, simple language. If a 12-year-old can’t understand what you do, you are losing revenue to complexity.
Your Next Step: The Golden Ticket
Don’t wait for a “restructuring” to realize you’re invisible. Start auditing how you are perceived today. Ask your peers: “What are the three words that come to mind when I leave the room?” . If those words don’t align with your “Cornerstone Words,” it’s time to pivot.
Ready to stop being a “rudderless ship in stormy seas”?
Life is not a dress rehearsal. Act accordingly.
